IN 1999 AVIAN BIOTECH DEVELOPED ANOTHER RELIABLE
WAY OF COLLECTING AND TRANSPORTING SAMPLES FOR DNA SEXING FROM VIRTUALLY
ALL SPECIES OF BIRDS. AFTER A CHICK HAS HATCHED FROM ITS SHELL,
THE VASCULAR MATERIAL IS LEFT BEHIND ON THE INNER SURFACE OF THE
EGG'S MEMBRANE. THIS MEMBRANE IS A GREAT SOURCE OF GENETIC MATERIAL
AND CAN BE USED FOR DNA SEXING.
SAMPLE
COLLECTION IS SIMPLE AND COMPLETELY NONINVASIVE

Once
the chick has hatched from the egg, carefully place the shells to
one side and indicate which shell belongs with which chick. Do not
touch the material inside the shell.

Allow
the eggshell to completely dry before submission. Shells may be
left in the incubator or removed and allowed to air dry for 24 hours
or until the egg is no longer moist. Removing the moisture will
slow down the decay of the DNA required for testing. Do not handle
or touch the vascular material in the egg.

Once
the shell is dry, place the entire shell in a zip-lock bag, paper-bag,
or small container and label appropriately. Eggshells do not have
to be in one piece and can be broken before and during shipping.
