AVIAN BIOTECH
OFFERS FREE KITS FOR BLOOD COLLECTION AND TRANSPORTATION FOR DNA SEXING
AND DISEASE TESTING. BLOOD VIALS ALLOW YOU TO TEST YOUR BIRD FOR VIRAL
DISEASES SUCH AS PBFD AND BACTERIAL DISEASES SUCH AS CHLAMYDIA. ADDITIONALLY,
BLOOD VIALS CAN BE USED FOR DNA SEX IDENTIFICATION. THESE TESTS CAN
BE PERFORMED FROM A SINGLE BLOOD SAMPLE (20µl).

Use caution when collecting samples: clean hands, clippers, etc.,
between each bird. Try to avoid touching the ends of the capillary
tip where the blood is placed. To learn more about sample contamination,
please visit our contamination section.

Label the vial with the species of
bird and bird identification. Bird identification can be a band
or microchip number, the birds name, or even a cage number. This
is important so you can keep track of which sample belongs with
which bird.

Once you have control
of the bird, use a clean pair of nail clippers to clip the toenail
2/3 of the distance from where the nail protrudes out of the toe.
Hold one end of the capillary tip to the end of the nail. Fill the
tip with blood and place in the pre-labeled vial. Screw the cap on
tightly and gently shake, mixing the blood with the buffer. |

Make sure the bird has stopped bleeding
before returning it to its cage. To help stop the bleeding, apply
a blood coagulant such as Kwik Stop with a cotton swab to the cut
nail.
